Throwback Thursday: Slap Bracelets

From jelly shoes and butterfly clips to Tamagotchis and Pogs, the 90’s produced some very memorable trends but none of those were quite as entertaining (and potentially dangerous) as the slap bracelet. Also called the snap bracelet, these plastic bracelets were a popular fad among children and teens of the late 80’s and early 90’s.

What was not to love? Not only did they come in just about every color and design you could imagine, they were also a great distraction in class and a perfect way to annoy your friends. It was a sad, sad day when teachers started banning slap bracelets claiming they were dangerous after one student removed the bracelets covering and ended up with a nasty cut on her wrist. Let’s be honest – they really just got tired of us all snapping and re-snapping them over and over in class. The irony? The slap bracelet was actually invented by a teacher. Wooppss!

Trendspotting: Whimsical Prints

Channel your playful side and try out one of this season’s popular trends – whimsical prints! These quirky designs are being seen everywhere lately, from the runway to your favorite celebrities, and we think they add the perfect cheerful quality to any outfit.

There are many ways to incorporate these fun patterns into your wardrobe, and while some designers have chosen to mix and match these lively designs for a print-on-print look, you can also choose to wear them as accents in the form of a heart-dotted scarf or a sweater sprinkled with little birds.

Designer and illustrator, Tad Carpenter, is a master when it comes to whimsical prints and has lent his artwork to everything from children’s books and posters to spot illustrations and national campaigns. Having been featured in publications such as Communication Arts and Drawn!, Carpenter is a story-teller at heart and loves to invite people into his world of whimsy.

Trendspotting: Tortoiseshell

It is always a battle to find a trend that is both classic and stylish, but nothing seems to resolve this dilemma more affectively than wearing tortoiseshell.  This pricey marbled material first became popular back in the Victorian age, only being available to the rich and affluent, and has since been worn by fashion icons such as Audrey Hepburn.

The versatility of tortoiseshell lends well to all things that accessorize, from jewelry and shoes to home décor. Wearing this luxurious pattern allows anyone to easily transition from the office to after work while adding a perfect polish to almost any outfit. Currently popular when accenting everything from red lips to a camel top, this trend is sure to continue being seen even more this coming fall.

Trendspotting: Chevron Pattern

This zig-zag print has a definite history, having been seen in badges, architecture, and early pottery, but in 2012 the chevron pattern evolved and emerged as a popular trend in women’s fashion and home styling.

There are many wonderful things about this geometric print, but its best attribute has to be its versatility. Drastically different looks can be achieved simply by having the stripes close together or far apart, in bold colors or subtle hues, or when being used as a small accent or as a statement piece.

Another great aspect of this trend is its adaptable, do-it-yourself quality. Due to the simplicity of this pattern, it has become a go-to design for craft projects, being painted on everything from picture frames to rugs and even being used in the re-purposing old furniture.

Metallic dresses have always been a great way to stand out on a big night like New Years Eve, but you don’t have limit your shine to simply evening and cocktail dresses. In 2012, the trend is about mixing metallic separates with relaxed pieces in order to add just the right amount of luxe to an everyday look.

Of course, you can always add luster in the form of a clutch, belt, jewelry or shoes for just a touch of shimmer, but why not go even a step further with this versatile trend? Pairing metallic shorts or skirts with casual t-shirts or sweaters is a great way to get that glamorous feel on a daily basis, and even adding things like stockings and scarves to a metallic dress will allow you to wear your most glitzy pieces in a more laid-back way.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Today marks the release of one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, “The Amazing Spider-Man”, and Spidey fans all over are reeling with excitement. Director Marc Webb’s version showcases an updated Peter Parker who is more of an outsider than a nerd, a slightly more detailed backstory, and some smoldering on-screen chemistry between co-stars Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker) and Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy). While it has only been 5 years since we last saw Spidey on the big screen, the fans can’t seem to get enough and the buzz is all around.

Summer is all about color, color, and more color! Bright hues are popping up all over the place this season, from clothing to accessories, but our favorite show of color has to be the newest trend – nail polish.

The shades of the seasons have been brought to life by popular nail polish lines, with vibrant fuschias and corals, neon yellows, and bright purple and blue hues making a statement. These pops of color are not exactly subtle, but they are the perfect addition to any look and are a great way to get into a summer state of mind!
