Trendspotting: Leather

Leather, leather everywhere – there wasn’t an article of clothing that you couldn’t find in leather this season on the runway. Sure, leather is usually associated with a harsh, rock-chic vibe, but now this fall favorite is being paired with more delicate pieces, such as a sweet lace dress or feminine polka dots for a softer, more versatile look. We all have that classic leather jacket in our closet, but this fall go further by upgrading other staple items with a touch of leather.

Example – a little black dress is great, but a little black leather dress is even better. The clean lines and luxe quality of the fabric vamp up the traditional look and give your wardrobe another dimension. Leather leggings are also a great way to put a spin on that classic pair of black skinny jeans. Dress it up with a blazer or go casual with an oversized sweater, either way it will make sure you are right on trend.

While wearing multiple leather pieces may seem risky, when done right it can be both a flattering and fashionable addition to your personal style.

Trendspotting: Wine Shades

Wine shades returned to intoxicate the 2012 runway this fall season with hues ranging from bold red to deep burgundy. Merlot, Bordeaux, Cabernet and more were just some of the colors that came uncorked and found themselves in the collections of many designers including Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, and Gucci.

Like fine wine, these rich garnet reds are not only complimentary, pairing perfectly with camel and charcoal grey, but they also stand well on their own, being able to be worn as a monochromatic look. You can find these tones in virtually any piece from outerwear and dresses to shoes and accessories and it is even seen in one of the other popular fall trends – the red lip.

Throwback Thursday: Slap Bracelets

From jelly shoes and butterfly clips to Tamagotchis and Pogs, the 90’s produced some very memorable trends but none of those were quite as entertaining (and potentially dangerous) as the slap bracelet. Also called the snap bracelet, these plastic bracelets were a popular fad among children and teens of the late 80’s and early 90’s.

What was not to love? Not only did they come in just about every color and design you could imagine, they were also a great distraction in class and a perfect way to annoy your friends. It was a sad, sad day when teachers started banning slap bracelets claiming they were dangerous after one student removed the bracelets covering and ended up with a nasty cut on her wrist. Let’s be honest – they really just got tired of us all snapping and re-snapping them over and over in class. The irony? The slap bracelet was actually invented by a teacher. Wooppss!

Trendspotting: iPhone 5

It has been a week since Apple announced the new iPhone 5, and people still cannot stop talking about it. There was a lot of anticipation that led up to last Wednesday’s announcement about of this years “it” device, and after hearing all about the new iPhone 5 features, we can understand why.

First, Apple updated the design of the iPhone by making it 20% lighter and 18% faster with a 4-inch retina display that gives a larger and brighter image of anything that crosses your screen. They also improved the performance by including an A6 chip that is 2x faster than the previous A5 chip, allowing for faster graphics and even better battery life due to it’s tremendous power efficiency. The wireless performance was also updated to include LTE wireless connection for ultra fast data retrieval.

It is important to note the improvements to the audio and camera as well. Not only has Apple enhanced the audio of the new iPhone 5 with three microphones, but it has also created new earpods that fit more comfortably for more people and produce higher quality sound. The new iSight camera features the ability to take panoramic images and allows for 40 percent faster camera capture speed and improved low-light performance.

Finally, the updated iO6 operating system highlights improvements to built-in apps such as Siri, now able to give you sport scores and make dinner reservations, Maps, which now has 3D interactive views with the Flyover option and turn-by-turn navigation, and FaceTime, which now allows you to chat face to face via a WiFi or cellular connection.
